The CSO (Central Statistics Office) released their most recent Irish crime statistics report; the findings are concerning. Over the past 12 months* burglaries have increased by 9% compared to the previous year**. This unsettling yearly increase trend with a total of 9,858 break-ins highlights the need for all homeowners to be more stringent when it comes to implementing home security measures, especially as we are experiencing longer, darker winter evenings now.
The CSO data outlines that 20 of the 28 Garda divisions have experienced an increase in break-ins within this period. The Tipperary Garda division experienced the highest rate of increase in the country at 59% (356 burglaries), the combined Roscommon and Longford division increased by 55% (257 burglaries), Cork West by 45% (77 burglaries) and Westmeath by 34% (273 burglaries).
The report did outline encouraging decreases in burglaries within some divisions, as both the Dublin Eastern Garda division and the combined Sligo and Leitrim Garda division had the highest decrease in burglaries at -19% (337 burglaries and 132 burglaries respectively). Louth Garda division experienced at -10% (314 burglaries) and Waterford Garda division -8% (180 burglaries).
